Groups Lessons in Fall Swing at Carburn Park

Our high school and group lessons are continuing this fall at beautiful Carburn Park. We have lots of students learning how to paddle a canoe properly and safely for the first time. The weather has been great and Jackie, Michel and I are the instructors lucky enough to be teaching at such a beautiful venue. Thanks again to the members who built the great canoe racks in our compound at Carburn. They are working very well for us.

Summer Camps are a Wrap

We had a blast the last 2 weeks of Camps here at BWCC. Our Explorers camp had a week of paddling in and around Calgary with a camp-out on Wildcat Island just west of Cochrane. They enjoyed fabulous food and good company with a little bit of rain as well. But with rain gear, good tents, tarps and a warm fire, campers had a great time. Our Trippers camp had a blast on the North Sask last week. We also enjoyed good food, company, and really great weather as well. We didn't even need fly's on our tents - the weather was that good. A picture speaks a thousand words, so enjoy the pics.

August Camps

August Canoe Camps are in full swing. Jackie and Bob are doing a great job teaching the campers how to canoe on moving water and have a lot of fun while doing it. The kids are having a blast on river trips and playing "Camoflage." I do have 2 spots left in the Trippers camp next week for ages 14-16. We will be going on the North Saskatchewan River from Saunders to Rocky Mountain House.

Spots left in next weeks 12-14 age catagory Explorers Camp

Hi everyone, I just back from a great vacation in Stewart and the BWCC canoe camp season is in full swing. I have a few spots left in next weeks Explorers camp for ages 12-14. This camp is really cool for any skill level because we go through all the flatwater and basic moving water strokes and use them on fun river trips all week. This camp has a overnight from Ghost Dam to Cochrane on the Thursday and Friday. Give yourselves a break for next Thursday night and let your kids experience a great night out canoe camping with us.

MEC Paddlefest a Success

Well, the MEC Paddlefest was a blast. Lots of visitors, awesome weather and Carburn Park as the venue made for a great day. I taught 4 clinics for introductory canoeing and had an interview with a local tv station. My dog Ribby enjoyed paddling with me in my canoe and with Kyle on his kayak. We also went for a scooter ride around the park thanks to Michel's awesome off roading scooter. The clinics that I taught went well. I had all ages ranging from 9 to about 69. I had a great day and I thank the volunteers that came and manned the booth all day. Great job! Can't wait for next year. Its an event not to miss.

Intermediate course on June 13

Well, the course went well. The weather was a scorching 25 degrees and the water felt great. No dumps or accidental swims and the time to get down to Cochrane from the Dam was less than anticipated. The group did very well with their eddy turns and forward ferries and we even had time at lunch to try some back ferrying skill development. Hope everyone had a great time, I know I did with the great help of Bob, Jackie and Dave.

Kayak Paddles Found

It's a miracle, someone found our kayak paddles and we got them back. Just so you all know, if you lose something, post it on Craigslist and Kijiji under the lost and found catagory and you may just get your stuff back. That is what happened to us and I am so happy that I took the time to post on those websites. It actually works.

Basic River June 6 Cancelled

Well, I had to cancel the lesson tomorrow, it's just too cold with the rain. There may even be snow too. Oh well, there is always June 20 and July 11 and Aug 8.

I lost my Brand new Paddle today

Well, I had a bad day today. Someone took my brand new Werner pink Twist bent shaft kayak paddle at noon at the Wildcat Hills Gas Plant Parking area. This is a popular take out for paddlers that put in at Ghost Dam. This same person took my Partner's bent shaft kayak paddle as well. If anyone sees these paddles out there please drop me a note.

May 2009

Well, this May has been a very busy month like always. Our Group Lessons (high school groups) have been in full swing since May 4 and we've had over 300 students go through our program so far. The first 3 weeks of June are also booked up with another 200 + students anticipated still to come. We have also had 2 successful flatwater courses and 1 Basic River course run in the last couple of weeks. Please check out our Lessons Program Broshure to see what up and coming courses we are offering. This year we have Jackie (pictured on left running Gooseberry Ledge) and Michel returning as full and part time instructors. Bob is a new instructor this year and is fitting in very well and turning out to be quite the natural teacher. Bob and Jackie will be my full time instructors for Canoe Camps this summer. They will make a great team. Keep posted for news about upcomming courses and camps.
